About Me

Welcome to The Stitchery which opened in October 2024! My name is Jennifer and I have a passion for yarn and crafty things. As a child I was surrounded by grandmothers who knit and who tried to teach me how to knit. Despite their best efforts, their training and attempts to teach me did not pan out until I was much older and then I still didn’t love knitting as much as they did. Although I know how to knit, my preferred method is crocheting and you will typically find me with a crochet project bag coming with me everywhere I go.

After the birth of our third child, I needed something to do that was just for me and that was when I came across a Crochet along featuring yarn from Scheepjes. This started my love (obsession?) with Scheepjes yarn, their Crochet alongs (CAL), knit alongs (KAL) and now their choose a path of Crochet or Knit along (CKAL). I look forward to their annual CAL pattern like a child looks forward to their birthday every year.

So, why Scheepjes? Why this yarn?

First, the quality. This company was founded in 1855. Their yarn is made of quality ingredients using responsible dyeing methods and production and the products they design are inspiring. Second, they stand behind their brand. If there is an issue with their yarn, they are willing to fix it. Third, the amount of designers (part of their design collective) that use the yarn and design around the yarn. Fourth? It reminds me of my roots and my grandmothers who tried to teach me yarn arts. What started as a hobby has become an obsession that is satisfied every year by entering items into our local fair – the Markham Fair. For the past decade I have been entering many of the items featured on the “Handmade Finished Items” page into the Fair and every year I have come home with a first place ribbon.

The great news is that what is listed on the website is not the only product we can have in stock. If there is something else you are looking for (after looking at The Scheepjes website), please get in touch and we can do a custom order.

I am constantly reminded of how wonderful the yarn community and the community of crafters I find myself in. The support of the people who have come in to the store or who have shopped from the comfort of their home is truly amazing to me. We would not be here if if were not for all you!

In October 2026 during our second anniversary, we are embarking on a new chapter, where we are pleased to open The Stitchery Harbour in addition to our retail space which is conveniently located steps from The Stitchery. This is going to be our new class studio and a worskhop space that crafters will be able to gather. Some of you may be asking "why The Stitchery Harbour" for the name? Well, we have lots of reasons for that. First, we carry only Scheepjes yarn and the word Scheepjes when translated means "little ships". All ships need a harbour to come to. Second, sometimes in life we find ourselves at sea, lost. Sometimes we all need a harbour to find our safe place in a storm, to venture out to learn new things or to rest our anchor in before we head back to try the hard things again. Lastly, we wanted to build the perfect harbour where you (our little ships) can come to rest, connect and transform your beautiful projects. Do not fear, our retail space is not going anywhere and you will still be able to find us where we have always been.
